St. Porphyry of Gaza

We go far back in history today to learn a bit about a saint whose name is not familiar to most of us in the West but who is celebrated by the Greek and other Eastern churches.
Born near Greece in the mid-4th century, Porphry is most known for his generosity to the poor and for his ascetic lifestyle. Deserts and caves were his home for a time. At age 40, living in Jerusalem, Porphyry was ordained a priest.
If the accounts we have are correct, he was elected bishop of Gaza—without his knowledge and against his will. He was, in effect, kidnapped (with the help of a neighboring bishop, by the way) and forcibly consecrated bishop by the members of the small Christian community there. No sooner had Porphyry been consecrated bishop than he was accused by the local pagans of causing a drought. When rains came shortly afterward, the pagans gave credit to Porphyry and the Christian population and tensions subsided for a time.
For the next 13 years, Porphyry worked tirelessly for his people, instructed them and made many converts, though pagan opposition continued throughout his life. He died in the year 421.

Welcome to the fifth day of your daily e-mail to aid you in praying the Novena to the Holy Ghost. The Novena is a nine-day series of prayers that recalls the original novena prayed by the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. Verse, Meditation, and Prayer for the Fifth Day

On the fifth day of the Novena to the Holy Ghost, we ask for the gift of knowledge, so that we may truly understand that the world is ordered toward God and we may be able to perceive His will for us.

Our Father

Next, recite the Our Father, the prayer that Our Lord taught us to say.

Hail Mary

Then, recite the Hail Mary, the best-known prayer to the Blessed Virgin, who joined the Apostles in praying the original novena to the Holy Ghost between Christ's Ascension and Pentecost.

Glory Be

Now, recite the Glory Be, a symbol of our faith in the Trinity, seven times (a perfect number, and the number of the gifts of the Holy Spirit).

Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost

Then, make the Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost, in which we implore the Holy Spirit for the grace to avoid sin.

Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost

Finally, pray the Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost, in which we ask Christ to send His Spirit to complete His work in our souls.

Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio

Sebastian's roads and bridges connected many distant places. His final bridge-building was to help men and women recognize their God-given dignity and destiny.
Sebastian's parents were Spanish peasants. At the age of 31 he sailed to Mexico, where he began working in the fields. Eventually he built roads to facilitate agricultural trading and other commerce. His 466-mile road from Mexico City to Zacatecas took 10 years to build and required careful negotiations with the indigenous peoples along the way.
In time Sebastian was a wealthy farmer and rancher. At the age of 60 he entered a virginal marriage. His wife's motivation may have been a large inheritance; his was to provide a respectable life for a girl without even a modest marriage dowry. When his first wife died, he entered another virginal marriage for the same reason; his second wife also died young.
At the age of 72 Sebastian distributed his goods among the poor and entered the Franciscans as a brother. Assigned to the large (100-member) friary at Puebla de los Angeles south of Mexico City, Sebastian went out collecting alms for the friars for the next 25 years. His charity to all earned him the nickname "Angel of Mexico."
Sebastian was beatified in 1787 and is known as a patron of travelers.

Comment:
According to the Rule of St. Francis, the friars were to work for their daily bread. Sometimes, however, their work would not provide for their needs; for example, working with people suffering from leprosy brought little or no pay. In cases such as these, the friars were allowed to beg, always keeping in mind the admonition of Francis to let their good example commend them to the people. The life of the prayerful Sebastian, still hard at work in his 90's, certainly drew many closer to God.

St. Francis once told his followers: "There is a contract between the world and the friars. The friars must give the world a good example; the world must provide for their needs. When they break faith and withdraw their good example, the world will withdraw its hand in a just censure" (2 Celano, #70).

Chicago Woman Gives Up Facebook For Lent

CHICAGO (CBS) — One Chicago woman decided to give up more than the usual when Lent began on Wednesday.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, some people might be inclined to give up sweets, pastries, candy or alcohol during Lent. But Christine Melendes has decided to give up Facebook.

Melendes says she has been used to using Facebook every day for the past five years.

She says she has been very active on the social networking site since 2007, posting status updates and pictures and checking what others have posted.

"I kind of feel like I forget to do something every morning before I go to work, but I'm doing pretty good," Melendes said. "I haven't cheated yet."

Melendes thinks she will learn something about herself by going without Facebook until Easter.

"Probably how much I use it, and how much I use it to stay connected to my friends and my family," she said.

Melendes is not giving up all social media, however. She says she cannot stop using Twitter along with Facebook.

"That would be impossible," she said.

Do We Remember the Angels?

You do not have to be Opus Dei to appreciate this work of faith in the angels:

The struggle between good and evil—the sad inheritance of original sin—is a constant reality in human existence on this earth. Therefore, as an ancient prayer says, we want to ask our guardian angel: Sancti Angeli Custodes nostri, defendite nos in proelio ut non pereamus in tremendo iudicio.Holy guardian angels: defend us in battle, so that we do not perish at the final judgment.
From his earliest youth, our Founder cultivated a deep devotion to the angels, and especially to his own guardian angel. Later, from the moment of the foundation of Opus Dei, his biography is filled with a strong and trusting piety towards these worshippers of God, and our good companions on the path to heaven. His writings as well contain abundant references to the ministry of the angels on behalf of mankind. As Scripture says, Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?[17] So great was his faith in the intervention of the angels, that he taught us to consider them as important allies in our apostolic work. "Win over the guardian angel of the one you want to draw to your apostolate. He is always a great 'accomplice',"[18] he wrote in The Way. And on considering that often the environment in which one finds oneself for professional or social reasons, etc., may seem far from God, he assured us: "You say there are many occasions of going astray in such surroundings? That's true, but aren't there any guardian angels as well?"[19]
The pealing of the bells of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, which never died out in our Father's heart, should resound in our own, as a reminder that our entire life has to be adoration for God, in union with our Lady, the angels, and the whole Church triumphant.
Our Father also cultivated a friendship with the archangel who—according to some Fathers of the Church—assists each priest in his ministry. "There is a very probable opinion that priests have an angel especially devoted to their care. But many years ago I read that each priest has a ministerial archangel and I was moved. I composed for myself a sort of Alleluia as an aspiration, and I recite it to my ministerial archangel in the morning and at night. At times I have thought that I do not have sufficient motive to believe in this, just because it was written by a Father of the Church whose name I don't even remember. But then I think of the goodness of my Father God, and I grow certain that, by praying to my ministerial archangel, even if I didn't have one, our Lord would send me one, to give a basis for my prayer and my devotion."[20]
Let us often stop to think about these and other teachings regarding the holy angels and strive to put them into practice, each in one's own way. Let us go to their help with confidence and trust. Internal difficulties that seem insuperable, exterior obstacles that look like real walls, are overcome with the help of these friends who are so powerful and to whose care God has entrusted us. But, as our Founder taught, drinking from the fountain of the Church's spiritual tradition, we need to foster an authentic friendship with our guardian angel and with those of the people we are trying to reach in our apostolate. For "the guardian angel is a Prince of Heaven whom God has placed at our side to watch over and assist us, to encourage us in our trials, to lighten our suffering, to guide and uphold us if we are about to fall."[21]
We find another reflection that can give us a lot of consolation in St. Josemaría's book Furrow: "The guardian angel always accompanies us as our principal witness. It is he who, at your particular judgment, will remember the kind deeds you performed for our Lord throughout your life. Furthermore, when you feel lost, before the terrible accusations of the enemy, your angel will present those intimations of your heart—which perhaps you yourself might have forgotten—those proofs of love which you might have had for God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. That is why you must never forget your guardian angel, and that Prince of Heaven will not abandon you now, or at that decisive moment."[22]

In 1220, St. Anthony was preaching conversion to the inhabitants of Padua when a young nobleman, Luke Belludi, came up to him and humbly asked to receive the habit of the followers of St. Francis. Anthony liked the talented, well-educated Luke and personally recommended him to St. Francis, who then received him into the Franciscan Order.
Luke, then only 20, was to be Anthony's companion in his travels and in his preaching, tending to him in his last days and taking Anthony's place upon his death. He was appointed guardian of the Friars Minor in the city of Padua. In 1239 the city fell into the hands of its enemies. Nobles were put to death, the mayor and council were banished, the great university of Padua gradually closed and the church dedicated to St. Anthony was left unfinished. Luke himself was expelled from the city but secretly returned. At night he and the new guardian would visit the tomb of St. Anthony in the unfinished shrine to pray for his help. One night a voice came from the tomb assuring them that the city would soon be delivered from its evil tyrant.
After the fulfillment of the prophetic message, Luke was elected provincial minister and furthered the completion of the great basilica in honor of Anthony, his teacher. He founded many convents of the order and had, as Anthony, the gift of miracles. Upon his death he was laid to rest in the basilica that he had helped finish and has had a continual veneration up to the present time.

Comment:
The epistles refer several times to a man named Luke as Paul's trusted companion on his missionary journeys. Perhaps every great preacher needs a Luke; Anthony surely did. Luke Belludi not only accompanied Anthony on his travels, he also cared for the great saint in his final illness and carried on Anthony's mission after the saint's death. Yes, every preacher needs a Luke, someone to offer support and reassurance—including those who minister to us. We don't even have to change our names!

Lent 2012 offers a rare way to honor Mary and Jesus at same time

Lent 2012 offers observant Catholics and other Christians a unique opportunity to honor the sacrifices of Jesus Christ by first honoring his mother, Mary.

Because of a quirky series of calender coincidences, Christians can use this year's Lent to also follow in the footsteps of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort. He was a French priest known for his deep commitment to Mary, and came up with a series of short prayers and spiritual practices to honor her called the Total Consecration.

This year, the Catholic calendar lines up so that both Lent and the Total Consecration start on the same day. The next time that happens will be 2075, Father Ryan Wayne Erlenbush told The Times.
It is a unique opportunity to do both," said Erlenbush, a Catholic priest within the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, Mont., who also blogs in his spare time at The New Theological Movement. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make it our best Lent ever.

Lent recalls the time that Jesus spent in the desert fasting, praying and fending off temptation. Today, many Christians observe the same 40-day period of self-sacrifice and introspection starting on Ash Wednesday. It all leads up to the single most important holiday on the Christian calendar, Easter.

St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, who died in 1716 and was elevated to sainthood in 1947, believed that the best way to honor Christ was through his mother. For those wishing to follow the Total Consecration, Erlenbush plans to post all the prayers and details on his blog.

"The Total Consecration has only fit together with the beginning of Lent 12 times since de Montfort's death, and it will not happen again until 2075. Hence, this is truly a most rare opportunity for us to consecrate this Lent to Jesus through Mary," Erlenbush wrote on his blog.

Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna (modern Izmir, Turkey), disciple of St. John the Apostle and friend of St. Ignatius of Antioch was a revered Christian leader during the first half of the second century.
St. Ignatius, on his way to Rome to be martyred, visited Polycarp at Smyrna, and later at Troas wrote him a personal letter. The Asia Minor Churches recognized Polycarp's leadership by choosing him as a representative to discuss with Pope Anicetus the date of the Easter celebration in Rome—a major controversy in the early Church.
Only one of the many letters written by Polycarp has been preserved, the one he wrote to the Church of Philippi in Macedonia.
At 86, Polycarp was led into the crowded Smyrna stadium to be burned alive. The flames did not harm him and he was finally killed by a dagger. The centurion ordered the saint's body burned. The "Acts" of Polycarp's martyrdom are the earliest preserved, fully reliable account of a Christian martyr's death. He died in 156.

Comment:
Polycarp was recognized as a Christian leader by all Asia Minor Christians—a strong fortress of faith and loyalty to Jesus Christ. His own strength emerged from his trust in God, even when events contradicted this trust. Living among pagans and under a government opposed to the new religion, he led and fed his flock. Like the Good Shepherd, he laid down his life for his sheep and kept them from more persecution in Smyrna. He summarized his trust in God just before he died: "Father... I bless Thee, for having made me worthy of the day and the hour... ." (Martyrdom, Chapter 14).

Welcome to the second day of your daily e-mail to aid you in praying the Novena to the Holy Ghost. The Novena is a nine-day series of prayers that recalls the original novena prayed by the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. You should receive one e-mail each day to remind you to pray the prayers for that day. Prayer for Today

Verse, Meditation, and Prayer for the Second Day

On the second day of the Novena to the Holy Ghost, we pray for the first of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: fear of the Lord. The meditation and the prayer for today both remind us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Prayers for Every Day of the Novena

Our Father

Next, recite the Our Father, the prayer that Our Lord taught us to say.

Hail Mary

Then, recite the Hail Mary, the best-known prayer to the Blessed Virgin, who joined the Apostles in praying the original novena to the Holy Ghost between Christ's Ascension and Pentecost.

Glory Be

Now, recite the Glory Be, a symbol of our faith in the Trinity, seven times (a perfect number, and the number of the gifts of the Holy Spirit).

Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost

Then, make the Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost, in which we implore the Holy Spirit for the grace to avoid sin.

Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost

Finally, pray the Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost, in which we ask Christ to send His Spirit to complete His work in our souls.

This feast commemorates Christ's choosing Peter to sit in his place as the servant-authority of the whole Church (see June 29).
After the "lost weekend" of pain, doubt and self-torment, Peter hears the Good News. Angels at the tomb say to Magdalene, "The Lord has risen! Go, tell his disciples and Peter." John relates that when he and Peter ran to the tomb, the younger outraced the older, then waited for him. Peter entered, saw the wrappings on the ground, the headpiece rolled up in a place by itself. John saw and believed. But he adds a reminder: "...[T]hey did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead" (John 20:9). They went home. There the slowly exploding, impossible idea became reality. Jesus appeared to them as they waited fearfully behind locked doors. "Peace be with you," he said (John 20:21b), and they rejoiced.
The Pentecost event completed Peter's experience of the risen Christ. "...[T]hey were all filled with the holy Spirit" (Acts 2:4a) and began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamation as the Spirit prompted them.
Only then can Peter fulfill the task Jesus had given him: "... [O]nce you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers" (Luke 22:32). He at once becomes the spokesman for the Twelve about their experience of the Holy Spirit—before the civil authorities who wished to quash their preaching, before the council of Jerusalem, for the community in the problem of Ananias and Sapphira. He is the first to preach the Good News to the Gentiles. The healing power of Jesus in him is well attested: the raising of Tabitha from the dead, the cure of the crippled beggar. People carry the sick into the streets so that when Peter passed his shadow might fall on them.
Even a saint experiences difficulty in Christian living. When Peter stopped eating with Gentile converts because he did not want to wound the sensibilities of Jewish Christians, Paul says, "...I opposed him to his face because he clearly was wrong.... [T]hey were not on the right road in line with the truth of the gospel..." (Galatians 2:11b, 14a).
At the end of John's Gospel, Jesus says to Peter, "Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go" (John 21:18). What Jesus said indicated the sort of death by which Peter was to glorify God. On Vatican Hill, in Rome, during the reign of Nero, Peter did glorify his Lord with a martyr's death, probably in the company of many Christians.
Second-century Christians built a small memorial over his burial spot. In the fourth century, the Emperor Constantine built a basilica, which was replaced in the 16th century.

Comment:
Like the committee chair, this chair refers to the occupant, not the furniture. Its first occupant stumbled a bit, denying Jesus three times and hesitating to welcome gentiles into the new Church. Some of its later occupants have also stumbled a bit, sometimes even failed scandalously. As individuals, we may sometimes think a particular pope has let us down. Still, the office endures as a sign of the long tradition we cherish and as a focus for the universal Church.
