Lent: Whatever your choice, it's a good one

For Christian people, Easter season is officially kicked off with the beginning of Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 22,2012.  Lent is practiced for 40 days from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday.  Sundays are not included in the forty day count because this is considered the official Sabbath day in most traditional Christian religious practices.  Lent is celebrated within most Christian religions not only Catholicism.  If you are curious about Lenton services and practices, you may consider visiting St Mary's Catholic Church, 34530 Michigan Avenue, Wayne, Michigan.  A complete rundown of service times are listd on their website (stmarywayne.org).

Lent is a fasting ritual that began around 313 AD.  The idea of Lent began evlolving after the legalization of Christianity that same year.  As lent was originated in teh Catholic Church, the rules of Lent developed via early popes and kings.  The word lent means to shine within newness like the spring.  The word lent was adopted for this Christian ritual because it implies the spring and this is when Christ fasted in the desert for 40 days to defeat Satan before His crucifixion.  This is described in scripture in Mathew 4:1-11 (NIV).
