ArchbishopTimothy Dolan says Mass in Rome ahead of his elevation to cardinal.
New York's cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan told top Catholic leaders in Rome they must spread their message with joy, love — and blood, if necessary.
Dolan addressed Pope Benedict and the church's Colege of Cardinals at a meeting in the Vatican City Friday on the eve of his elevation to the elite club.
Dolan will receive his red hat from the Pope Saturday and said cardinals wear that color to signify their willingness to shed blood for their faith.

Dolan, the keynote speaker at the gathering, also spoke about New York as a city with "graphic secularism" but deep faith as well.
"It is also a very religious city," he told his audience.
Dolan and 21 other cardinals will be appointed cardinals Saturday, which gives them authority to elect the next pope.
