Oh My God

The Creator of all creation is totally perfect and totally holy. Taking His name in vain doesn't make God any less holy, but it does make His name less holy in the eyes of the world.

Saint of the Day: St. Eugene de Mazenod

Eugene de Mazenod was born on August 1, 1782, at Aix-en-Provence in France. Early in life he experienced the upheaval of the French Revolution. None the less, he entered the seminary, and following ordination he returned to labor in Aix-en-Provence. That area had suffered greatly during the Revolution and was not really a safe place for a priest. Eugene directed his ministry toward the poorest of the poor. ... Read More »

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
http://new.usccb.org/bible/readings/052112.cfm

Acts 19:1-8
Psalm 68:2-3ab, 4-5acd, 6-7ab
John 16:29-33

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

We will never know the number of people John the Baptist baptized in the Jordan, but it is important to know that his baptism was different from the baptism that came after and which you and I received.

John's message was one of repentance and preparation. The Messiah was coming and the people were called to repent of their sins and prepare for the Lord's arrival. In some sense, John's baptism had no sacramental value.

The baptism that Jesus sent His followers into the world to do was a baptism of rebirth. When the countless Christians over the ages were submerged into the waters, they rose as new people. They died with Christ when they went into the water, and came out as new beings, cleansed of original sin. This baptism is lifesaving and is rich in sacramental power.

Medieval reformer Pope St. Gregory VII honored May 25

Medieval reformer Pope St. Gregory VII honored May 25

ewtnnews.com | May 20th 2012

On May 25 the Catholic Church celebrates Pope St. Gregory VII, who sought to reform the Church and secure its freedom against the intrusion of civil rulers during his 11th century pontificate.

Born in the Italian region of Tuscany sometime between 1020 and 1025, the future Pope Gregory VII was originally named Hildebrand. His father Bonzio is thought to have been a carpenter or peasant farmer, while his mother's name is unknown. His uncle Laurentius was abbot of a monastery in Rome.

Sent to the school run by his uncle's monastery, Hildebrand entered a world of discipline and fervent devotion. After his primary education, he entered religious life as a monk. Hildebrand served as chaplain to his mentor John Gratian who had a brief and turbulent reign as Pope Gregory VI.

In 1046 Hildebrand left Rome for Cologne along with Gratian, who was forced to leave Rome and resign from the Papacy. After the former Pope's death in 1047, Hildebrand left for France and spent more than a year in the monastery at Cluny.

During 1049 he made the acquaintance of Bruno of Toul, who would soon become Pope Leo IX. Under his reign, Hildebrand was put in charge of a historic monastery, which he rescued from structural and administrative ruin through a series of reforms.

Hildebrand served Leo IX as an adviser and legate until the Pope's death in 1054. While others considered him a possible successor to Leo, Hildebrand did not wish to be elected, though he continued his work as an influential and respected cardinal during several subsequent pontificates.

In April 1073, Hildebrand was finally elected as Pope Gregory VII. Though he still did not want the office, his electors praised him as "a devout man … mighty in human and divine knowledge, a distinguished lover of equity and justice, a man firm in adversity and temperate in prosperity."

Overwhelming challenges confronted the new Pope – including scandalous corruption among the clergy, a hardening schism between the churches of Rome and Constantinople, and a struggle against civil rulers who claimed a right to choose the Church's clergy and control its properties.

In March of 1074 Gregory promulgated a sweeping set of reforming decrees. These met with widespread opposition, but the Pope stood his ground. The resulting standoff pitted him against the German Emperor Henry IV, who sought to depose the Pope when threatened with excommunication.

The Pope carried out his threat and declared that the emperor's subjects were no longer bound to obey him as their ruler. The emperor was forced, in 1077, to come before the Pope as a penitent, spending three days waiting in the snow before he was received and given the conditions of his reconciliation.

Though temporarily reconciled, Henry was excommunicated for later attacks, which included supporting a rival Pope and invading Rome. Gregory never gave up his pontificate, but was forced to flee the city in 1084.

"I have loved justice and hated iniquity, therefore I die in exile," he proclaimed, just before his death in Salerno on May 25, 1085. Remembered as a champion of the Church's freedom against state intrusion, St. Gregory VII was canonized by Benedict XIII in 1728.

Hillary Reflects on her Years as Secretary of State

Hillary Reflects on her Years as Secretary of State

newsmax.com | May 19th 2012 8:51 PM
With 777,000 miles under her belt and 96 countries visited Hillary Clinton is nearing the end of her tenure as President Obama's secretary of state, which put her in the middle of two wars, an economic crisis at home and abroad, the rise of China and other emerging powers, the march toward a nuclear Iran, and the Arab Spring. And of course the ever-raging Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a USA Today interview in which she talked about her time at the State Department, Clinton discussed the grueling nature of the job, and how she has been able to cope with its demands. "I've got good stamina and recuperative powers. Also, I love what I'm doing, and it's so endlessly challenging and interesting — every day something new, no two days are the same."

Visiting 96 countries hasn't been a choice, Clinton said, but a necessity. "Even though we live in the age of so-called virtual reality, where I could do a video conference with anybody in the world in government, I could even be satellite-beamed into a personal appearance somewhere…nothing substitutes for showing up. You know the old Woody Allen adage — 90% of it is showing up," she said.

Even with questions about debt, wars and unemployment, there is no question that America is still the world's top political, economic and military power, Clinton said. "It's true that America can't solve every problem, but I don't know of any major problem in the world that can be solved without us.
So we are still in a position of predominant leadership."

Clinton loves being America's top diplomat but did not want to commit to another term, should the President get re-elected, because she wanted to focus on giving her all for four years and then move on after such a grueling commitment. "I may look like the bionic woman from the outside, but this is a very intense experience. It's a 24-7 job," she said.

She's looking forward to taking some time, writing, giving speeches and philanthropy. "I don't know what else," she said. "But that's what I'm looking forward to."

Cory Booker: ‘Stop attacking private equity’

Cory Booker: 'Stop attacking private equity'

by Washington Free Beaco, freebeacon.com
May 20th 2012 11:19 AM

Newark Mayor Cory Booker credited Bain Capital with growing businesses and said attacks on private equity must stop, during "Meet the Press" Sunday.

As far as that stuff, I have to say from a very personal level, I'm not about to sit here and indict private equity. It's—to me, we're just getting to a ridiculous point in America. Especially, I know, I live in a state where pension funds, unions and other people are investing in companies like Bain Capital. If you look at the totality of Bain Capital's record, they've done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses; this to me, I'm very uncomfortable.

Booker went on to compare the private equity attacks to attacks on Rev. Jeremiah Wright, calling them a "distraction" and "crap."

But the last point I'll make is, this kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides. It's nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough—stop attacking private equity, stop attacking Jeremiah Wright. This stuff has got to stop. Because what it does is it undermines to me what this country should be focused on. It's a distraction from the real issues. This is either going to be a small campaign about this crap, or it's going to be a big campaign about the issues that the American public cares about.

Former Obama administration auto czar Steve Rattner also defended the record of Bain Capital last week, during a "Morning Joe" segment.

"So, yeah, I do think to pick out an example of somebody who lost their job unfortunately, this is part of capitalism. This is part of life," Rattner said. "And I don't think there's anything Bain Capital did that they need to be embarrassed about."

Rubio on Obama: Most ‘Divisive Figure In Modern American History’

Rubio on Obama: Most 'Divisive Figure In Modern American History'

nation.foxnews.com | May 20th 2012

Florida senator Marco Rubio slammed President Barack Obama in a South Carolina speech delivered last night to a large gathering of Republicans.

"For all the policy disagreements that we may have with the president, it is hard to understate how much he inspired people across this country four years ago, with his promises to unite America and lift it up," Rubio said about Obama, referring to his 2004 DNC speech and 2008 presidential run.

But, Rubio said, President Obama has changed: "The man who today occupies the White House and is running for president is a very different person. We have not seen such a divisive figure in modern American history as we have over the last three and a half years."

Mich. prosecutor charges 3 men in carjacking of Detroit pastor, gospel singer Marvin Winans

Mich. prosecutor charges 3 men in carjacking of Detroit pastor, gospel singer Marvin Winans

by Associated Press, startribune.com
May 20th 2012

DETROIT - Three young men were arraigned Sunday in the assault and carjacking of popular Detroit pastor and gospel singing icon Marvin Winans.

The office of Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy identified the suspects as Detroit residents Montoya Givens and Christopher Moorehead, both 20, and Brian K. Young, 18, of Macomb County's Clinton Township. They are charged with carjacking, unarmed robbery and conspiracy, said Maria Miller, Worthy's spokeswoman.

The charges carry up to life in prison.

The men appeared in Detroit's 36th District Court and were ordered held on $200,000 bonds. Their preliminary examinations, in which a judge decides where there's enough evidence for the case to go to trial, are June 1.

It wasn't immediately known if the three have lawyers yet. Miller didn't immediately respond to an email sent Sunday seeking information on their representation.

Winans, 54, was attacked Wednesday afternoon while pumping gas in Detroit. The robbers took his sport utility vehicle, Rolex watch, cash and credit cards.

Worthy said she was pleased with the closing of the case but added a dig at the effectiveness of Detroit police. She said she was "buoyed by the fact that this case was well investigated by the police and that we were able to charge this case quickly. However, with the proper resources this could be done in all cases."

Chief Ralph Godbee said last week that he was proud of the quick work his officers did in making arrests and said crime in the city has been about steady, despite a number of high-profile cases. "We're doing all we can with the resources we have," he told The Detroit News.

A message seeking comment was left with Detroit police Sunday.

Winans sustained bruises and scrapes and was treated at a hospital and released. He is pastor of the 4,500-member Perfecting Church and delivered singer Whitney Houston's eulogy in February.

"I'm just saddened that it has come to this," Winans said shortly after the attack. "This kind of nonsense just has to stop. It's just the savageness of what's happening in the street."

SpaceX To Attempt A Second Launch On Tuesday, May 22

SpaceX To Attempt A Second Launch On Tuesday, May 22

by Matt Burns, techcrunch.com
May 19th 2012

SpaceX-COTS2-Logo-0512a

SpaceX and Elon Musk will not be held from the history books. Last night the company announced that engineers were currently replacing a faulty valve on engine #5, and if successful pending a data review today, the company would attempt a second launch on Tuesday, May 22nd. This comes as SpaceX's maiden voyage to the International Space Station was cut a half second short by an automated safety function built into the rocket.

SpaceX is attempting to become the first privately owned entity to reach and dock a capsule with the ISS, therefore increasing its chance to win what will likely be a lucrative contract to ferry cargo and humans between Earth and Space. So far these duties have been carried out by the U.S., Russia and Japan. However, as governments are cutting space budget programs they are looking to hand over these relatively nominal duties to the private sector and redirect funds to long-range space exploration and science programs.

Come next Tuesday, SpaceX will attempt to make history again

UPOU online education for all

UPOU online education for all

philstar.com | May 21st 2012

MANILA, Philippines - Individuals whose work schedule or family obligation prevents them from schooling can now earn their college or graduate degree. This is possible through UP Open University (UPOU), Commission on Higher Education's National Center of Excellence in Open Learning and Distance Education.

"We want (to provide) wider access to quality education," offers UPOU Chancellor Grace Javier Alfonso on the cyber campus' mandate. "(We want to offer) help to higher education institutions… we can connect with the other universities and maybe other universities can look at us as template. We also want to reach (out to) the faculty of the different SUCs (state universities and colleges) and private higher education institutions for them to take the courses. They can right away, without leaving their places, implement the new knowledge."

In the past 17 years, UPOU has produced more than 3,000 graduates from the degree-granting units of Faculty of Education, Faculty of Information and Communication Studies and Faculty of Management and Development Studies. It offers pre-baccalaureate, baccalaureate, pre-master's, master's and doctoral degrees.

Recently, e-UP, the information communication technology (ICT) flagship project of UP president Alfredo Pascual that interconnects all UP campuses nationwide, kicked off at UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna. The interconnectivity will mean academic and operational excellence. The project is also in response to Pascual's battle cry "One UP," which means "one standard, the same quality of education, academic excellence and efficiency," among UP campuses, says Chancellor Alfonso.

The e-UP project also allows the university to share resources with other higher education institutions. There will be an exchange of knowledge, experiences and expertise through Web-aided lectures.

For details, log on to www.upou.edu.ph or e-mail at info@upou.edu.ph.

US university system better than Oxbridge?

US university system better than Oxbridge?

oxfordstudent.com | May 20th 2012

Rebecca Temerario compares her experiences on both sides of the Atlantic…….

While the system of higher education in the United Kingdom is accommodating to individualism, this does not mean that the American system needn't be. I attend Sarah Lawrence College, near New York City, which enrolls about 1,000 students each year. Sarah Lawrence doesn't have any fraternities or sororities, as other American universities do; instead, Sarah Lawrence offers seminar courses based on the Oxford system, which takes Oxford's model and makes it better.

As a visiting student at Wadham College, I've been able to experience the differences between the educational systems in Britain and America firsthand. Oxford's one-to-one tutorials definitely offer the ability to study one's particular course in-depth. American colleges combine this depth, however, with breadth. Since most American students have been studying a range of subjects since high school, I've found that the American collegiate model is focused on creating a more well rounded individual, whereas Oxford produces experts in one field.

At my American institution, I will focus on a particular subject or two, in which I will "major." But along the way, I will also be required to take courses outside of my discipline. The classes I enroll in will allow me to meet at least twenty other students who I am able to bounce ideas off of, besides my professors. At Sarah Lawrence, students also meet individually with their instructors, just like at Oxford. To me, the American system has the potential to offer students the best of both worlds: a range of fulfilling academic work, as well as the ability to meet other students in the classroom.

The collegiate experience students pay for in America ($15,000 to $60,000 per year, for four years) is an all-encompassing cost. For the price of tuition, a student is offered a meal plan, room and board, and access to clubs and on-campus events. Students receive housing for the full four years, and do not need to look for off-campus accommodation unless they wish to do so.

And that fourth year of college is there for a reason. Since American students take a range of classes outside of their major, a fourth year allows one to pursue and a thesis or explore an internship for academic credit. Thus, the American collegiate system focuses on more than just academics. It develops the person as an academic and social creature, and prepares one for the working world before they even leave college.
